Iguazu Falls Brazil/Argentina

The falls are some distance from any of the major cities in South America, so much so we had to take a domestic flight from Rio to the nearest falls airport Iguazu. sitting on the border between Brazil and Argentina and close to the tri-corner with Paraguay the falls are well worth the lengthy journey. We set out from a hotel in Brazil, intending to visit both sides starting on the Brazilian side first. on landing at the airport there was as small tour operator who helped us to book the tour for the next day. There were no issues with the tour guide, we crossed the Argentinian border easily and there were no real delays getting into the National Park on both sides either. The parks have stunning, well maintained boardwalks which take you right to the edge of a number of the falls, both large and small. even on a slightly rainy day, the Iguazu Falls were truly breath-taking! The views from all of the walkways we took were amazing – standing literally on the brink of the cliff over which the river thunders as it generates a permanent cloud of mist is an experience not to be missed, and impossible to replicate. In addition, the [sometimes quite lengthy] walk out from the edge of the river on walkways across the quiet flowing water before it reaches the drop point was also a unique experience, surprisingly calm and winding through the jungle. The undoubted star of the show is the incredible power of nature as the Igauzu River rushes over a horse-shoe shaped line of waterfalls several kilometres long, roaring thunder and whipped into a raging thunder as it drops 100 metres or thereabouts into the gorge and continues on its way. At the most intense point, the area known as Devil’s Throat or similar names, the sound and sight of the water going over the falls is just stunning – a ‘do not miss’ for any visit to South America. We spent far longer at the Argentinian side than the Brazilian side as we took the dare devil trip of riding into the falls on a speed boat and then had a lovely meander up the river and around the. Both sides are equally stunning and the opportunity of a life time to see.
